Nancy R. “Rosie” Walters

October 3, 2023

Nancy R. Walters (Rosie), 89, of Frankfort, passed away peacefully at home on October 3, 2023. She was born in 1934 to Lester and Opal Hardwick in Rushville, Indiana.

Rosie was a 1952 graduate of Muncie Central High School. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Indiana Central College and her master’s degree from Ball State Teacher’s College. She met her husband and love of her life, Dick Walters, while a student at Indiana Central and they were married on June 30, 1956. Dick preceded her in death in September 2017 after 61 years of marriage.

Dick & Rosie made their home in Clinton County, Indiana where Rosie was an elementary school teacher for 43 years. She taught at Forest Elementary, Kyger Elementary, and then Clinton Central Elementary until her retirement in 1999. Rosie was a dedicated, caring teacher who made a difference in so many lives. She still heard from many of her past students who considered Rosie their “favorite” teacher.

Rosie had a close group of friends whose love, support & companionship meant the world to her. Rosie was a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who loved nothing more than to have everyone together, especially at the beach and during the holidays. Her family is grateful to have so many wonderful memories and will cherish them forever.

MRS. Walters…in your class, I was Kenneth to allow another to be Kenny. I suppose that was the beginning of learning a more grown up perspective. I was glad to reconnect on Facebook. You were the first teacher I ever saw outside of school. Teachers are real people, too! Comfort & blessings to your family.

Pam, Jay and the rest of Rosie’s family – we are so very sorry for your loss. For almost 34 years (even more for Mark) we were honored to call your mom our neighbor. I’ve always been so in awe of Rosie. She never stopped! She was so proud of her kids and grands. She was an awesome lady! Sending our love and sympathy to all of you.

I feel stunned and so saddened to hear of this sorrow. Rosie was the most gentle, caring person, excellent teacher to two of my children, and an inspiration to me and others. We would talk now and then and it was always a pleasure, always leaving me feeling lighter. I know I join many others in keeping Rosie in my heart. She will forever be lovingly remembered. Heartbroken for you.

What a beautiful person Mrs Walters was, both inside and out. She was a force to be reckoned with, and had a natural ability to teach and lead with heart and love. The 8 year old in me grieves losing her, but at the same time I am so appreciative to have been blessed with Mrs. Walters as a teacher. As a third grade student, I was privileged to get a glimpse of the magic between Mr. and Mrs. Walters each time I was given the task of delivering a message to the high school. The romantic in me can’t help but hope that some of those Inter-Department Envelopes held nothing more than love notes and encouragement for each other. Their relationship was a living example of what I hoped to have some day. How fortunate I was to be her student. She impacted lives, made the world a better place and will not be forgotten.

Family of Rosie Walters: Rosie was a great teacher and mentor. When I began teaching at CCE, Rosie was a seasoned teacher. Once I began teaching in 3rd grade, Rosie was there to advise, assist and guide. Rosie was always searching for innovative ways to teach her students. She embraced changes and loved finding new ways to reach her students. She and Dick were an awesome teaching team. Now they can be together as a team in Heaven! Prayers of comfort and peace for her family and friends!
