Anthony Francis “Tony” Konopa, 76, of rural Frankfort, passed away February 13, 2022 at St. Vincent Kokomo Hospital. He was born June 2, 1945 in Beloit, WI to Frank Edward & Leona (Mayer) Konopa. He married Ann Marie Mauhar on November 11, 1967 at St. Thomas Church in Beloit, WI and she survives.
Tony was a 1964 graduate of Beloit Catholic High School. During Tony’s stint in the U.S. Army, he served in The Vietnam War. He was in Army intelligence attached to (MIBARS) the 1st Military Intelligence Battalion Air Reconnaissance Support as a photo interpreter (Eyes in the sky). His headquarters company was based in Saigon at Muscara Compound. After his time in Vietnam he worked in the Pentagon teaching photo reconnaissance and photo interpretation to other Army Intelligence soldiers. He moved from Wisconsin to Frankfort in 1980 as he was chosen to be part of the startup team in the new, all computerized Frito Lay, working in maintenance as a supervisor. Later he started working as a maintenance supervisor at Coca-Cola in Speedway. He then went on to work at Red Gold in Elwood and even though he never went to college, he became their project engineer, retiring from there. He had a lifelong dream of owning a pet store, so after retirement he opened Natures Wonders Pet Emporium. He and his family attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He had many hobbies including, woodworking, hunting, fishing, raising orchids, gardening, loved his salt water fish aquariums, nature of all kinds and his latest hobby was wine making. Tony’s grandchildren were his pride and joy. He loved his family as they meant everything to him. He and Ann had also been foster parents for several years.

Facebook Twitter GoogleAnn and family, I am so sorry to hear about Tony’s passing. He was such a great guy and I really enjoyed working with him at the Frito Lay, Beloit plant. Always a soft spoken man and also very patient. You were our baby sitter for our first son Joshua for awhile, such a long time ago. My husband, Ron passed away Feb 4th, 2022 and I certainly know what you are going through. Gods peace to you and your family. Keeping you in my prayers. Colleen Culver

Facebook Twitter GoogleTo the Konopa family,
I am so sad for your loss and know that he will be sorely missed. Tony was a wonderful and trusted employee. His pre-pack breakfasts for his maintenance crew were delightful and everyone looked forward to them each year. I enjoyed hearing about his hobby of raising orchids and wish I had asked him more details about them. I always marveled at his work ethic of driving from Frankfort every day. He always made in to work on those bad snow days, even when others who lived much closer did not! really liked Tony and enjoyed working with him very much.
Sincerely,
Brian Reichart

Facebook Twitter GoogleThank you Lee. I heard about the flooding and felt so bad about it as I know you would of course wanted to be here. There were many times we would talk about how nice it would be to see you but he hasn’t been able to travel for a long time because of his back which I’m sure other family members have maybe said something to you. Hoping you are in good health and enjoying life to its fullest. I am assuming that you are retired? Take care love you, Ann and Tony.
