Steven Lee Shanks, 75, of Carmel, Ind., passed away on December 9, 2022.  He was born December 31, 1946 in Frankfort, Ind. to William Carl & Opal Lucille (Younger) Shanks.  He married Sandra Zetterberg on November 7, 1971 and she survives.

Steve was a 1965 graduate of Frankfort High School.  He worked for Mohawk Hills Golf Club as a PGA Golf Professional for 35 years, retiring in October, 2014.  He was a member of the National Guard from 1965-1971.  Steve enjoyed woodworking, fishing, and golfing.  He loved spending time with his family, especially his eight granddaughters.

Visitation and Services

A private service will be held. Burial will be in Bunnell Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Steve asked for donations to be made to: Gifts of Grace Adoption Support Center, 656 N. 36th St., Lafayette, IN 47905.

Wife: Sandra Shanks of Carmel, Ind., 2 Daughters: Jefra Bounds of Westfield, Ind. and Carlee (Femi) Dawodu of Battle Ground, Ind., Sister: Jill Evans of W. Lafayette, Ind., 8 Grandchildren: Catherine Dawodu, Debjani Dawodu, Kinleigh Bounds, Keziah Dawodu, Elizabeth Dawodu, Eden Dawodu, Jubilee Dawodu and Aliyah Dawodu.

Preceded by:

his parents and a brother, Roger Shanks in 1978.

    Steve was 2 years behind me in school, but we grew up in the same neighborhood, only a block apart. Steve was a great kid and a good golfer. My condolences go out to his family. Bill Tankersley

Steve loved to talk about the old neighborhood and all of the great times he had playing with the neighbor kids and his cousins, the Stevens, who lived right across the street from him. Whenever we got together for family events there were usually some stories about the good ol’ days…playing kick the can, baseball, etc with the neighborhood kids. Thank you for remembering him.       Thank you so much. Steve loved Mack like a brother. They were such good partners for all of those years at Mohawk. So happy that we were able to make it out to California last year to see Mack and Michael and their golf course. We made such good memories with them on that trip. Thank you all for being like family to us for 43 years! We love you!

    Sorry to hear this news… I knew Steve from PGA section services and his affiliation with Mohawk. I also had the pleasure of coaching one of his granddaughters during her time spent on the Westfield Middle School golf team. Always generous with his time and wisdom, Steve Shanks was a good golf professional and a better person! Condolences and prayers are sent from my family to all of Steve’s family and friends.     It is with the most sincere condolences on the notification of Steve’s Sanchez passing. I knew Steve from 1975 and I work for him for 20 years he was a great boss and a great friend we used to go out on a weekly basis to eat with Sandy himself and my wife I will miss him dearly.

    It was such a privilege getting to know Steve over the last 5 years. He had the best smile and was always so bright and positive. I always looked forward to seeing him, and every visit with him brought me joy and made me feel good about practicing medicine. I will miss seeing him greatly.     Sandy we were shocked to hear this. Have always had a special place in our hearts for you and Steve. Would love to visit with you but we don’t get to Indy but once or twice a year.
