Sam Paul was an excellent pillar of the community and was also known as a get volunteer examiner coordinator for the ham radio testing teams at the Frankfort Community Public Library every three months. I took all three of my exams there and I got a big high five from Sam when I upgraded from General to Extra April 23,2011.

When Sam was County Assessor, I was in his office frequently gathering information for farm appraisal reports. During one visit, he shared with me that his father owned several threshing rigs and did custom threshing for the farmers around Hillisburg. He also revealed that from the time he was a young boy, he had transported and operated the large cumbersome equipment (steam engine and separator), all around the eastern half of the county. I shared a story my father often told about one of the last times they threshed on our family farm southwest of Michigantown. Dad was watching for the rig to arrive and saw it turn west off of the Michigan Road headed for our farm. As he watched it get closer, he could not see an operator in the seat and became concerned until he spotted a young man barely tall enough to reach the controls at the wheel. Dad thought “Oh no! This will be a long drawn out affair getting the separator set and belted to the engine”. To his amazement, the boy wheeled the rig through the gate to the field, unhitched the engine, turned it around, lined up perfectly, belts were installed and they were ready to thresh!! Sam chuckled then said “Lewie, I was that kid driving the engine that day!” What a wonderful memory of Sam Paul….
