Mary Jane Innis McMahon of Frankfort, Indiana passed Away at 2:23 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at St. Vincent Frankfort Hospital. She was born to J.C & Nina Innis and
on April 8, 1949 she married Edward W. McMahon who preceded her in death on April 2, 1993.

Mrs. McMahon was the first female Mayor elected in Frankfort serving from January 1976 until December 1983. Mary Jane was the first Frankfort Mayor to be elected to consecutive terms. She worked in the County Clerk’s Office from 1962-1966 before being appointed City Clerk Treasurer serving from Nov 1966 until Dec 1975. She was honored by receiving the “Sagamore of the Wabash” twice. First by Gov. Otis R. Bowen on May 21, 1977 and then by Gov. Robert D. Orr on August 5, 1981. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church since 1937. Mrs. McMahon volunteered at the Clinton House Health and Rehabilitation Center and was a Pink Lady Volunteer at the Frankfort Hospital. She received the “Woman of the Year” in 1984 by the Indiana Republican Mayor’s Association and served on several appointed Indiana State Commissions.

Visitation and Services

Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 12, 2014 at the Goodwin Funeral Home in Frankfort. Friends may visit from Noon until the time of service. Interment will be in Bunnell Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the Clinton County Humane Society with envelopes available at the funeral home.

4 Grandchildren: Jody (Husband-Vicente) Blas of Kokomo, Kelly Shaffer of Indianapolis, J Scott (Wife-Andrea) Shaffer of Kokomo & Mark (Wife-Heather) Masavage of Batesville 1 Son in Law: Jerry Stanbrough of Batesville 6 Great Grandchildren: Josh (Amy) Halton; Hali, Madison & J Scott Shaffer; Ashlee & Harlee Masavage. 2 Great Great Grandchildren: Kyden & Kasch Halton

Preceded by:

Preceded in death by 2 Daughters, Shawn Lea McMahon in 1953 and John Ann Stanbrough on May 6, 2006. Also preceding her in death were 6 Brothers and 2 Sisters.

    Frankfort lost a great lady and many of us lost a good friend. Our deepest sympathy to her family. Memories of her will always be with us. She had a very interesting life and shared stories with a bit of humor. We sometimes laughed so hard, the tears would flow. She is with her beloved husband Ed and her 2 daughters. May God be with her, on her journey to his home.

    On behalf of my mother, Nancy Sue Carpenter Stockdale, and myself, we extend our deepest sympathies. Mary Jane was a one-of-a-kind lady who was truly the complete package–she was smart, sweet, accomplished, and beautiful inside and out. She was another daughter to my Frankfort-native grandparents, Herbert and Hazel Carpenter, and was my mother’s beloved best friend. She was a great lady with a beautiful spirit, and will truly be missed. She made an indelible mark on all she met, and we will always honor and love her.

    Saddened to hear of Aunt Mary Jane’s passing this week. She was such a special lady and I have fond memories of visiting her and Uncle Ed with my mom and dad (Joe Innis) over the years. The youngest of her siblings, she wasn’t much older than dad and they had a special relationship. Aunt Mary Jane was the reason I first got interested in politics and gave me my first elephant. We will miss her.

    Aunt Mary Jane was the first person I ever went deep sea fishing with and comforted me the first time I became sea sick 🙂 I am thankful for the many times I bragged to my friends that I had an Aunt (Great Aunt) that was a Mayor and could make anyone laugh! Her contributions to the local and state government of Indiana and the appreciation she showed me early in my Navy career will never be forgotten as well as her influence to me early in my teens. I remember the many times that she made my Dad (Joe Innis) and Mom (Barbara Innis) laugh and the smile she put on my grandparents’ faces ((Oliver Paul and Edith Innis).

    A sad week for my family and me personally but know she is keeping my Dad in line in a better place and making many more people smile and laugh!
