Ida Ruth Smith Hawley 86, a former Kirklin Township resident, died at 9:45 a.m. September 27, 2009 at Wesley Manor, Frankfort. Born December 8, 1922 in Clinton County to Walter E. & Tina E. (Hampton) Whitinger. She married Robert H. Smith on August 14, 1948 and he died on January 4, 1988. She then married C. Robert Hawley on March 19, 1995 and he survives. Mrs. Hawley was a 1940 graduate of Jackson Township High School and was a homemaker and farm wife. She was a member of Yoke Ministry, Kirklin United Methodist Church, Kirklin P.M. Extension Homemakers, past president of Clinton County Extension Homemaker, Friends of the Manor member, Red Cross volunteer and a Pink Lady.

Visitation and Services

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at Goodwin Funeral Home. Services will be officiated by her grandson, Chris Smith. Visitation will be Tuesday, September 29, 2009 from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Memorial donations may be made to the Sara Costlow Memorial Fund c/o Clinton County Community Foundation or the Clinton County Cancer Fund, envelopes will be available.

Woods of Frankfort 7 Grandchildren: Ellen (Scott) Ballock of Ann Arbor, MI, David (Nancy) Costlow of Scottsdale, AZ, Christopher (Sonja) Smith of St. Louis, MO, Chuck Smith of Oakland, CA, Sam Smith of Lafayette, Briana Chasteen of Frankfort, and Cassie (Mark) Bishop of Kalamazoo, MI 13 Great Grandchildren

She was preceded in death by 4 brothers, Sylvan, Floyd, Walter and Melville Whitinger and 1 sister: Marjorie Paul, Daughter, Sara Costlow in 2000 and Grandson, Matthew Smith in 2005.
