George Albert Hopp 91of Frankfort, IN, died September 19, 2011 at Witham Hospital, Lebanon, IN. Born October 28, 1919 in Kirklin, IN to the late Oral & Pauline (Nolte) Hopp. He married Mary Jean Smith on September 14, 1939 in Kirklin, IN and she preceded him in death on October 1, 1992. He then married Mary Jane (Swope) Lane on December 3, 1994 and she survives. Mr. Hopp was 1937 graduate of Kirklin High School. He helped family with farming in Kirklin, owned Standard Oil Station in Kirklin, went on to work at Firestone in Noblesville for several years. He loved fixing things and working at Hopp’s Sales & Service in Kirklin. He also enjoyed his 34 years at Beard’s Equipment in Frankfort. He was a member of the Community Christian Church. His integrity and generosity touched many family and friends. The family wishes to thank the many friends, neighbors, caretakers, etc. who have helped support our parents in sunshine and in rain.
Visitation and Services
Service will be 2 p.m. Friday, September 23, 2011 at Goodwin Funeral Home. Visitation will be Thursday, Sept. 22 from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Green Lawn Memorial Park. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of donor’s choice.

1 Son: Gordon (Carolyn) Hopp of Indianapolis
Step Son: Robert W. (Connie) Lane Sr. of Frankfort
Step Daughter: Linda Alward of Cullman, AL
18 Grandchildren and 20 Great Grandchildren

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Mary Jean, 2 brothers, James & Dwight Hopp and grandson, James Maxwell.

Facebook Twitter GoogleI came to Frankfort fresh out of Purdue in 1973 to work at Beard Industries. During my 13 years there George was a good friend and mentor. We shared a lot of work, laughs, stories, and lunches together. In those days before email, fax, and cell phones, most of the service work was done by phone, and wherever I traveled to work on dryers, whether Wisconsin or Iowa or Nebraska, I always found people who had “talked to George”. I’m sure his phone number is still written down in a lot of farm sheds and grain elevators. George had a big heart and a good sense of humor, and went out of his way to solve many people’s problems. I think of him often as I still repair an occasional dryer or two. I’m sorry for your loss.

It has been many years since I have seen and talked to George, but have never forgotten him for the time and assistance he offered me in the earlier years. George taught me many things during those times. I am very pleased in having George be a part of my life. He will be sadly missed. Please forgive me, circumstances did not allow me to attend the services and meet the family. Again I am truly sorry.

I learned much “over the phone” by listening to George asking questions diagnosing dryers. He was always available and taking time to teach and help anyone. He was a person you could count on. His word was his bond. I don’t ever remember him getting upset or angry. He always thorough and patient in his work. I continue to apply the wisdom and knowledge learned from George in new and different ways, but I have never forgotten him. Please accept my condolences.
