Foster E. Awman, 96, of Frankfort, IN, died April 18, 2020 at Wesley Manor.  He was born September 26, 1923 in Preston County, West Virginia to Bruce F. & Lillie G. (Jenkins) Awman.  His marriage was to Frances Pauline Cramer on December 25, 1943 in Oakland, MD and she survives.

Foster attended Cuzzart West Virginia Schools.  He had lived in Albright, WV for 42 years and moved to Frankfort on October 25, 1965.  Prior to moving to Indiana, Foster was a farmer and a heavy equipment operator for a coal mining company, he then worked for Dick Rogers and Sun Communication in construction for 35 years, retiring on June 1, 2000.  He was of the Christian faith, a member of the First Wesleyan Church in Frankfort and for many years was on the Church Board and a Church Trustee.  He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.  An avid gardener, who loved to share his vegetables, he was an honest man, was known as a gentle soul, fun loving, hardworking, and had a good sense of humor.  He never met a stranger.

Visitation and Services

Family services will be held on Wednesday, April 22, 2020 at Goodwin Funeral Home, 200 S. Main St., Frankfort, IN, with burial to follow in Green Lawn Memorial Park, Frankfort, IN. Services will be conducted by Victor Wilson, son-in-law of Foster. Memorials in memory of Foster may be given to the Indiana Parkinson Foundation, 14350 Mundy Dr. Suite 800 #181, Noblesville, IN 46060.

Wife: Frances P. Awman of Frankfort, IN, 5 Daughters: Bonnie R. Marshall of Lexington, KY, Dottie S. (Drew) Ivers of Danville, IN, Sharon L. (Victor) Wilson of Coopersville, MI, Donna A. (Don) Gilberg of Purcellville, VA, Sonya D. (Bill) Miller of Frankfort, IN, 9 Grandchildren, Jason & Jennifer, Andrew, Audelee & Ash, Roman & Ryndee and Jenna & Doria and 19 Great Grandchildren.

Preceded by:

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, and 3 sisters, Elva Deal, Genieve Shaffer and Rosalee Welch.

    We are so sorry for this time of grief & loss. Foster was a great kind & generous friend who loved the Lord. We always enjoyed talking to him. Chris & Foster worked together on various projects for the Wesleyan Church. Foster set an example of perfection with patience in his work.     Dear Awman Family, It has been so long since I have seen many of you and yet I will never forget Sunday 10 course meals at your house. Foster was a great man who I was fortunate to spend a few years with. He was an inspiration in that he enjoyed and knew the simple things in life were some of the most important. I know we will all miss him but I also know he is in a beautiful place waiting for the rest of us. Hugs

    Grandpa – thank you. You were one of the hero’s in my life. From finding nuts in our shoes, to crazy good and big vegetables, to your phenomenal patience and good heartedness (akin to the biblical description of “loving kindness”) you were/are a great man and example. Looking forward to our reunion in the New heaven/earth.
    Grandma – thank you! Your tireless example of love and service these last years is an inspiration to follow the example “as I have loved you, so you shall love another”. I pray the Father’s comfort for you now and in the days to come. It’s just a ‘short’ separation. We have a certain hope to be reunited soon.     Miss Frances and the whole Awman family. I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Foster. He was a great man and had such a wonderful personality and loved you all so dearly. You were his pride and joy. He always had some of the funniest jokes and stories. I have so many precious memories of him that I will always hold near and dear to my heart. I am so thankful for all of the time I got to spend with him as well as your mom. As well as time with your family. Even in his home-going, he makes my heart smile, because I know he has made Heaven his home. He never failed to demonstrate God’s love and spirit of peace.     So very sorry to hear of Foster’s passing. Always enjoyed talking with him and hearing some stories. My best memories of him was walking up behind me at the church and grabbing my shoulder to hear him say How you doing? I been praying for you this week. Will miss him. But knowing he is in the arms of our father. We will meet him again one day.

    Drew & Dottie & the entire Awman family, It is never easy to lose a parent no matter what their age. But no one can take away all those years of fond memories. I never got the chance to meet Foster. But, I know Drew had nothing but good words to say about Foster. Actually he was amazed at what a hard worker he was, even up to retirement. And as I recall Drew’s words, he was a sterling example of humility..

Your Dad had a smile filled with warmth for all. He was one of the kindest men I had the privilege of knowing. He was a great support to the church and to each ministry.     Sonya and Bill, I am so sorry for your loss. I didn’t know your dad very well. Mostly I visited with your mom, but he was always close by and smiling. It’s hard to lose someone right now, especially your dad, but you have lots of love around you. Please give my sympathy to your mom from me.

    I met Foster when he came to Wesley Manor. He was a gentle, kind soul. He always came to chapel and devotions with a smile, and I knew I had a friend. Foster was one of those rare individuals who exhibited the love of God with his smile. As heaven opened and welcomed him, I’m sure he heard the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” May we all someday hear those words.

    I am sorry that we can not be all together as one big family to celebrate grandpa. He was such a wonderful kind, loving grandfather. I enjoyed growing up with him as my grandpa. As I became an adult, I enjoyed staying with you while I was on work trips. I will always cherish our breakfasts together, walking through the garden, talking about the birds and flowers. Marshall and Ashton sure did love their grandpa in the “rocking chair.” I look forward to our family reunion in heaven…..

    I have fond memories from my childhood spending lots of time at your house. I was there so often I was nicknamed Buggy. I still cherish those memories and thankful for them.

    That was a beautiful service. I’m so thankful it was webcast live so Kylynn, Wyatt, Dax, Chaustin, and I could participate. I only knew Foster for the last 20 years of his life, many of which were marked by a disease that steadily robbed him of a functional body. Still, I never saw him down, sad, angry, or anything other than kind and of good spirits. He was a beautiful man and I am thankful for his influence on my wife, our children, and me personally.     My prayers have been with you is as you were prepared for this day, the special day when you’ll be able to remember your loved one, Brother Foster. It’s been a joy, my joy, my privilege to have ministered to him and to be with him at various times. We’ve prayed together. We’ve talked together. Sometimes our times together would be long and we’d even go to sleep together, in our various chairs. I appreciate this man for what he means to us, to you and to God. My last two visits with him were very special. We were able to talk about West Virginia, the coal mining and his sharing with me was a blessing to me. I wish I could be there with you today.

    Hello all,

    Foster was a special person. I remember him as a kind and gentle man. He was a good neighbor, always ready to help out when there was a need. I remember one time he brought a piece of equipment home from work and helped me bury a wire from the house to the post lights along the driveway. You all are in our thoughts and prayers.

    Dear Donna, It has been 45 years since I met your dad and 40 years probably since I last seen him. The passing years do get away from us but the passage of time can not diminish the strength of those memories. As I write this, I can still feel the firmness of his handshake at that first meeting on Burlington Avenue. Your dad will forever be a man that I feel fortunate to have met.
