Fairy Marcella Hackerd

September 8, 2023

Fairy Marcella Hackerd, 84, of Camden, Ind., ran into our Savior’s arms on September 8, 2023.  She was born on March 4, 1939 in Frankfort to Claude “Tom” Steward and Grace L. (Edmonds) King.  She married Robert E. Hackerd in 1957 and they later divorced.

Fairy graduated in 1957 with honors from Frankfort Senior High School.  She worked for National Homes for 14 years and Frito Lay for 15 years, retiring on March 18, 1996.  Fairy was known around Carroll County as the “Mum Lady”, selling chrysanthemums and produce for a dozen years.  She was a member of Woodside Christian Church and then Delphi Christian Church where she was active in the church choir.  Her love of her church family and teaching the youth led her to serve her churches by teaching Sunday School, leading youth group, and participating as a church camp counselor.  An avid reader herself, Fairy will soon be a published Christian book author.  She was a Cub Scout Den Mother and enjoyed cooking, gardening, and being outdoors, but above all her love of her faith and family stood strongest.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donation may be made in Fairy’s honor to the American Humane Association, 1400 16th St. Northwest, Suite 360, Washington, DC 20036 or the National Fibromyalgia Association, 3857 Birch St., Suite 312, Newport Beach, CA 92660.

I was kayaking on the Wildcat when we heard that Fairy had passed-I had an immediate vivid vision of the gates of heaven opening-and Jesus running down the steps to enfold Fairy in an enfolding hug- I bet all her furry loved ones were waiting just inside! I can think of no person more suited for her Heavenly home.

Bob and Fairy (and Dawn) were extraordinarily important to me in my younger years, and I’ll never be able to repay them. It’s difficult to give her up, but we all know of her love for others and her willingness to display her devotion to Christ in things he did for others, so we give her to God, knowing that she is loved and cared for. “Bye, Fairy. We’ll all joining you again and it will be a welcome homecoming. Until then, we will miss you.

Some of my favorite memories are her sweet iced tea, her sitting in the kitchen with the oven door open and the warmth just enveloped you! She would haul you to church, camp outs, family reunions … there’s so many memories… more importantly she loved us and we loved her!

Dawn & Martin, Sorry to read of my friend, Fairy, passing. Fairy and I were friends from the time we were 8th graders and were in each others wedding. We also went to Woodside Christian where she was active and had the youth group where our son, Kenneth, was in. Kenneth was sorry to hear of her passing and sends his prayers to you. Fairy was a wonderful person and Christian. She will be so missed by many as she is now in Heaven with God. I will always remember all the good times we had and her beautiful smile. She loved her children and send my prayers and Kenneth and Susan his wife send their thoughts and prayers. I will not probably be at the calling and funeral am not able right now. God Bless You. Devena

It was always an exciting day to hear we were going to Fairy’s growing up. We would play Guesstures and eat ham salad and maybe pinch some mums or pick some strawberries. How beautiful it is to have known her.
