Dear Zora…….I am broken-hearted at the news that Donn has passed away. Paula called me today to tell me.
I have strong memories of both you and Donn and I don’t doubt that the two of you had the strongest kind of love and family. You’re both such good people and, no doubt, great parents. I have two sons about the age of yours and I can only imagine how hard this is on your boys. I am so sorry.
I am also sorry that this has to be the first time we communicate in 35 years. (Seems like only 10 years ago that I lived with you.)
Just want you to know I am sincerely sad for you and the boys and thinking of you.
    Jo

  16. Charie Pratt McLaughlin May 17, 2010 at 8:27 pm

    Dear Zora, Max & Spencer,
Words can not express the saddness I feel. Your husband and father was such a special, wonderful man. “A man with passion for life and happiness and deep love for his friends, family and most of all God” can only begin to describe what all our worlds have lost.
The leader of the group always in his “Ole” way exclaiming “Come join me- celebrate this moment together – come celebrate this day!”
May the memories of his smile and kindness shine through your hardest days ahead and may the strength of his love for the three of you carry you always. You are in my thoughts and prayers as he is- may God Bless you all.
    Love Always,
    Charie

As a business man, Vice President at the Farmer’s Bank in Frankfort, of which my wife & I have done business for over 35 years, and as a younger Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity brother at Ball State (’70), Donn L. was outstanding in every respect. We hope this thought will help Zora, sons, & family.

    Dear Zora, Max, and Spencer,
We were so very, very saddened by the news of Donn’s sudden passing. You have all been in our prayers.
Our memories of Donn will always be of a smiling, laughing, warm, loving, fun, faith-filled, and humble man who loved life and his family dearly. John very fondly remembers the Halloween nights with our girls and Donn and Max and Spencer covering Oakwood in Valparaiso. Kathleen always thinks of him when she passes your old house and sees the beautiful boxwood hedge he planted in front. Many wonderful memories of a good friend and neighbor. Our thoughts and prayers will continue for you and we will see you this week.

  23. Linda Benge and family May 18, 2010 at 9:44 am

    Zora and family,
I don’t take the paper, but read it online occasionally, so was shocked to read this. You KNOW that you are in our thoughts and prayers. We know, as Christians, that our loved ones who have passed over, are alive and well with our Heavenly Father, and what supreme comfort we take in that knowledge. However, living…enduring…the remainder of our time on earth without them, is what we have to strengthen ourselves to do. I pray that the Comforter surrounds you during these days and months and that you allow yourself to take HIS strength. In Jesus’ Precious Name,
    Linda and family

  29. Jane Ann Vigus Steiner & Family May 18, 2010 at 7:26 pm

    Zora, Max & Spencer
Ole was so special and we all loved him as we love you. There are no human words to use to comfort you at this time. Know that we, your many friends, are there for you, but you need to draw on your strong faith and love of God & His Son at this time. That is why we turn to God’s Word because that is the only place we can go to draw our strength. He is your Rock and will not fail you.
Psalm 28: I pray to you, O LORD, my rock. Do not turn a deaf ear to me…Praise the LORD! For he has heard my cry for mercy. The Lord is my strength and shield. I trust him with all my heart and he helps me.
You are in my and many people’s prayers and God’s love will get you through this,
    In Love,
    Jane Ann Vigus Steiner (Vigi)

    Dear Zora, Spencer and Max,
We join with these other folks to offer our prayers and sympathy. I did not know Ole personally but often felt I did just a little because of how highly you (Zora) spoke of him. Sunday morning praise and worship held a new meaning as I imagined him before the throne. May God comfort and keep you.
    Love,
    Michele and Lillie Tansey

  32. Lydia Keller, May 18, 2010 at 11:29 pm

Donn was the guy that inspired me to go on to the Indiana University School of Business. We were in almost all of the same classes at Penn and our senior year we had to play an economic world game for our grade. Don was my partner. I may be smarter than him, but he was slicker. We won and got the only A for the class….Thanks Don for helping me, believing in me, and giving me the drive to succeed.
    Miss you,
    Lydia (Takerer) Keller

  35. Sherry Rockwell Peters May 19, 2010 at 7:53 am

    Dear Zora, Max, and Spencer,
I am Debbi Singleton’s sister and know Ole through their many times together throughout high school and beyond. I cannot think of a time when I saw Ole with anything but a smile on his face and kind word for everyone he saw. He was truly a spirit-filled and loving person. As coincidence would have it, when Ole came to Merrillville to work at Fifth-Third Bank, my husband, Tom got to know Ole, too, as Tom was a banker in Northwest Indiana. He enjoyed his friendship with Ole very much, as they saw eye-to-eye on banking biz! When I think of Ole, I remember that authentic kindness he brought to everyone he met and everything he did. There is no better legacy than that. God bless you and the boys as you face this most difficult time. Many prayers are with you. Respectfully, Sherry and Tom

  36. Greg Bloskey May 19, 2010 at 8:31 am

To the Walling Family: I occasionally spoke to Donn, about fifteen years ago, when he was with National City at the Merrillville office. I regularly dealt with one of the local branches and had a special question suited for the executives. Donn was professional, caring and dedicated. He is the reason that I kept National City on at that point. I am terribly sorry for your loss. He was rare. I am writing an autobiography, featuring the outstanding people, and I want to include him. You may contact me.
God Bless you and comfort you. I would contrubute to the education fund but I have hit on hard times with family illness and discretionary funds are tight. I am sorry.

Max and Spencer, we did not get a chance to know your father, but all one needs to do is look at his many accomplishments to see he was a great provider and caring man. Keep your shoulders broad and strong for your Mom. You have our sympathies.

  46. Jack Deal May 20, 2010 at 8:17 am

    Zora and family,
As all of us, I was truly shocked and saddened by the loss of Ole. My deepest sympathy goes out to you. Ole was one of the finest men I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. It was through him that I was first introduced to my wife, Joan. He will truly be missed by all who knew him. Although he is gone, I will cherish the memories of him forever. May God give your family strength in your time of sorrow.

  47. Kristy Stockberger May 20, 2010 at 12:09 pm

My heart goes out to you Zora, Max, Spencer and your extended family. Donn was a wonderful man and will be remembered by all of the people who came in contact with him. I will always remember how he/you guys taught Spencer and I am sure Max as well how important it is to look someone in the eye when you talk to them and to always shake someones hand with a firm handshake. I told my mom who worked with Donn at the bank that looking someone in the eye is not an easy task for anyone to do but when you are taught it at a young age it is much easier. I myself have a hard time doing it but I always try to remember to do it and I think of how when Donn would always tell Spencer to look at the person that he was talking to right in the eyes. I will never forget that. I will miss seeing him down from my parents house at Mary’s and I will miss seeing him in the bank when I go in there to visit my mom. My deepest sympathy goes out to you and your entire family. This community has lost a wonderful person and he will truely be missed. Thinking of you all. You have so many wonderful memories of him and you will always have those to look back on and he will forever be in your hearts.

  48. Deb Riggins May 20, 2010 at 1:19 pm

    Dear Zora and family,

The two of you made the rest of us smile while watching you ! Please know you are all in my thoughts and prayers. Take care and draw strength from each other.

  49. Lynne (Smith) Baker May 20, 2010 at 4:57 pm

    Zora,
I was truely saddened by the loss of Ole. He was a wonderful person and I will cherish my memories of him. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

  51. Coleen ,Patrick,Sean, Britt & Tynan Costin May 20, 2010 at 8:07 pm

    Dear Zora, Max & Spencer,
Our hearts are so sad with the shocking news of Ole’s passing. His life was cut too short too young yet he lived everyday & every moment to the fullest–a legacy for all of us to follow. Ole was always the example of how to find those special moments in the everyday of life–just enjoying the moment with friends. So many great memories from Ball State to New York, New Jersey, Wheelers, Costins & Wallings–adventures as couples & with the kids for so many great years. Although life detoured us all to different parts of the world with our growing families–those memories are still so close to Pat & I and our kids. Our kids all expressed how it could’nt be their “Uncle Ole”, too soon for the one who always made sure everyone was having a great time. A lasting impression from so many years ago–he will be missed greatly but always be a part of our special memories. Our thoughts and prayers are with you & the boys during this difficult time.

  52. Martha (Schumacher) De Laurentiis May 20, 2010 at 10:09 pm

    Dear Zora,
Riney and Chari both emailed me with this very sad news – it’s been so long since I’ve seen you both, but your smiles and spirits have always been with me. Even more so now. I send you strength and courage, love and prayers. Ole was a gifted man and he shared his gifts and love with us all. You will always have those gifts with you.

  53. Garry Davis May 21, 2010 at 9:43 am

Some of my most fondest memories of Ball State involved being a Sig Ep with Ole. (We were pledge brothers.) Ole was simply one of the most likeable guys I’ve ever met. Condolences to your family.

  54. Jan (Haney) Markley May 21, 2010 at 9:45 am

    Dear Zora,
As an AOPi sister I always remember you with a smile on your face and enthusiasm about everything! It seems like you found the perfect mate in Ole. What fun you must have had over the years together!
I pray your memories and God’s love will sustain you and your sons through the difficult times ahead.
