Suzanne “Sue” M. Payton, 78, of Frankfort, died February 10, 2020 at home.  She was born February 5, 1942 in Indianapolis, Ind. to the late Richard V. Gustavel & Mary Helen (Boyd) Gustavel.  She married James E. Payton on November 6, 1964 and he preceded her in death on December 17, 2005.

Sue was a 1960 graduate of Frankfort High School and was a homemaker.   She was a member of the First Evangelical Presbyterian Church for over 65 years, where she served as past deacon, trustee, and elder, along with being a member and secretary of the Presbyterian Women’s Association, member of various bible studies, and small groups.   Sue was also a member of the Red Hat Society, a former board member of United Way, former member and officer of Tri Kappa, had cooked for the Happy Times Club for 26 years and delivered Meals on Wheels for many years.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Sue’s honor to the church, United Way, or Guardian Angel Hospice, envelopes will be available at the church.

Visitation and Services

Visitation will be Wednesday, February 12, 2020 from 1-3 p.m. followed by Memorial Service at 3 p.m. at the First Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 352 West Clinton Street, Frankfort, Indiana 46041.  Pastor Kelly Kurth will officiate.

She is survived by her Son: Jason E. (Jennifer) Payton of Carmel, Indiana; Daughter: Stacia M. (Jason) MacMurray of Haleiwa, Hawaii; 2 Sisters: Sharon (Ron) Costlow of Fishers, Indiana and Karla (Darrell) Sanders of Frankfort, Indiana; and 4 Grandchildren: Clive and Maddox MacMurray and Levi and Vivienne Payton.

    To Stacia and Jason my heart aches for you as you’ve lost a very special lady. Your mom was the sweetest, most caring and sincere person of anyone I know. I enjoyed our friendship and good times. She will be missed. Love to you. Jan Kersey

    We were blessed to have had Sue a part of our church family and our lives. We will miss her beautiful smile and her kind heart. Our prayers are with you as you celebrate Sue’s life.

    I knew Sue since the beginning of Riley Grade School,through eighth grade and high school. She was always pleasant. A lovely person always. I also was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Our minister at that time was Dr. Howard Kipp. We attended vacation bible school and did all the activities related to the church as well as swimming, riding bicycles, etc. We had a wonderful life! Sue was a member of the “Herd”, a group of girls who always hung together. An older student probably gave us that name , and we really did do everything as a group. I have many good memories of all the girls and our times together. Sue will never be forgotten…she was truly lovely inside as well as outside. I knew her sisters, but never knew her children or grandchildren of whom she was very proud. May you rest in peace now and forever more. May her family know that she was loved.

    Where do I begin with my memories of your mom. Sue and I began as small children attending the First Presbyterian Church Sunday school. Kindergarten at Riley school was the beginning of 12 years of school together. When we started at the junior high, I’d stop and get Bonnie; then we would pick up Sue and head to Betty’s. Melanie would meet us there and off we’d go to Judy’s. Patti, Rosie, and Sandy would meet us there. The ‘herd’ would then proceed to school. What a special group of friends – and more were added over the years. Terry and Jim would always go with Sue and I when we had class reunion planning parties. All the husbands enjoyed our reunion gatherings as much as the girls did. Sue and I would walk to Youth fellowship at the church on Sunday night. We became members of the church together -served on several Boards, and of course, have been in Bible Study for I don’t know how long. Plus, we are members of many other clubs and organizations. My association with Sue has been for over 75 years. I loved this Christian lady and I will miss her greatly. Stacia and Jason: you were blessed with a beautiful mom and one that you can be truly proud of.

    What a very special & godly lady Sue was. Heaven gain a good one. I’ve got a nasty stomach virus & don’t want to spread it so we won’t be at church for her Memorial Service. Prayers for God’s love & comfort to surround all of you. Lynette & Jeff Hardesty

    So sorry to hear about Sue. I have known Sue since the beginning of grade school. She was always positive and lots of fun. She also was a woman who never spoke ill of anyone. I stopped by to see her about 4 years ago. She was working in her yard. Somehow I ended up with a big heavy wheelbarrow she wanted out of her garage. I used it then and have used it many times since always reminding me of her. Sue was a wonderful person both inside and out and she will be missed. Now she is no longer in pain but I bet her and Lynn are probably causing trouble in heaven. Just wanted the family to know what a jewel she was.

    Jason and Stacy. We were so sorry to hear of Sue’s passing. You were certainly blessed to have such a gentle and beautiful soul as your mother. Surely she rests in the arms of her Father in Heaven, reunited with Jim. Take comfort in that knowledge. Sorry we were unable to attend. Really enjoyed the on line pictures you honored her with.     Just heard of Sue’s passing, too late to attend her calling. I enjoyed the memorial photos posted here. I went to school with Sue and also knew Jim in our younger days. My deep condolences to her family and close friends. Look forward to seeing you, Sharon, at our next class lunch.
