PFC Clossie D. Brown

January 21, 1945

US Army Private First-Class, Clossie D. Brown, Company F 2nd Battalion 157th Infantry Regiment 45th Infantry Division has come home.  Clossie died on January 21, 1945 near the village of Reipertswiller, France during WWII at the age of 37.   Clossie entered the U.S. Army at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana on April 8, 1944.  He served in the European Theater.  During intense ground combat in the area, he was killed by enemy fire.  His remains were not accounted for following the battle, as German units controlled the area. Between 1945 and 1947, French civilians and demining units discovered numerous remains in the hills and forest in the vicinity of Reipertswiller and alerted American graves registration personnel.  Beginning in 1946 the American Graves Registration Command, U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps was the organization tasked with recovering missing American personnel in the European Theater. As part of their work, units recovered numerous remains that could not immediately be identified.   In June 2021 and August 2022, the Department of Defense and American Battle Monuments Commission exhumed the remains of Unknowns from Lorraine American Cemetery, in France and from Ardennes American Cemetery in Belgium for forensic analysis and comparison with PFC Brown, among other unresolved casualties.  Identification was made from DNA specimens obtained from maternal cousins of Clossie Brown.

Clossie received the following medals; The Bronze Star Medal, The Purple Heart, Army Good Conduct Medal, The European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, The World War II Victory Medal, The Combat Infantryman Badge, and Honorable Service Lapel Button.

Clossie was born September 24, 1908 in Kirklin, Ind. the son of Alonso D. & Mary (Shimmel) Brown. He had three siblings, Alvin Dewey Brown, Denzel Louis Brown and Losa Cleo Brown. He married Mildred Irene Cline and they had two children, Barbara Joan (Brown) Heaton and David Lee (Joyce) Brown, two granddaughters, Roslyn R. (Heaton) Clendenning of Kokomo, IN and Annette J. (Brown) Sisson of Story City, IA.

The service will be live-streamed at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, September 24th.  To participate, click the link below. The video will be available to view for 90 days.

  6. Pete Downs August 24, 2024 at 10:10 am

Courage is contagious. When a brave man takes a stand, the spines of others are stiffened. Our country’s REAL heroes are our brave soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines who, with a prayer on their lips, leave their loving families to protect our land or to become a symbol of hope for a downtrodden, underserved, and at risk nation, begging for liberty and justice. My family and I are eternally grateful for your service. Welcome home, Sir . . .

My husband and I are from Muncie and currently visiting Normany. We visited the American Cemetery at Omaha Beach a few days ago and numerous WWII monuments and battle sites. It’s a solemn journey. We won’t be back in Indiana until the night of the 24th, otherwise we would be there to honor this soldier. Many French homes in this area fly the American flag. They have not forgotten the sacrifice of soldiers like PFC Clossie Brown. May he rest in peace. Home at last. Dr. John and Mrs. Barbara Durbin

  63. Donald Lear September 21, 2024 at 6:57 pm

To the family and friends of PFC Clossie Brown. I never knew nor have I ever heard of Clossie, Before yesterday. But I feel compelled to write something about your American hero. My name is Donald Lear and I am a ramp supervisor with Southwest Airlines at Denver International Airport. When Clossie’s Plane arrived in Denver, I had the honor of escorting the Army Sergeant first class, to the debarking of PFC Brown. His actions were honorable, in that I felt, he was honoring and protecting his own brother. Upon hearing that these were the remains of the World War II veteran, I was completely humbled. Although, I am not kin to Clossie, We are brothers, separated by a generation and branch of service. Upon reading some of his story, I want you to know that I was so grateful to be able to honor Clossie, on his final trip home. I want to convey to you my sincere thanks for the sacrifice of PFC Brown, so that I may enjoy my personal freedoms. I am not a representative nor do I speak for Southwest Airlines, but want you to know the care and honor that was bestowed upon such an American hero, while under our care. All ramp operations within a good distance were ceased in order to have a quite environment to honor the PFC. The ramp crew and pilots had removed their hats while standing at attention rendering heartfelt respect. I thought it important for you know the sacrifice, Your family has endured is not forgotten by me (and others). I wish you all well-being and welcome home PFC Clossie Brown Rest in Peace Sir.
