Nancy Lee Longfellow Bailey

August 11, 2024

Nancy Lee Longfellow Bailey, 84, of Frankfort, Indiana, went to her home in Heaven on August 11, 2024.  She was born on Saturday, March 30, 1940 to Carl Boyer and Thelma Lee (Pearson) Longfellow.

Nancy was raised on the family farm just north of Pickard, Indiana.  She attended Sugar Creek High School before marrying Warren David Bailey, Sr. in September of 1956.  They settled in Pickard to raise their six children, Janet Lee Bailey Kuhlman, Judy Bailey (Jim) Robertson, Warren (Anita) Bailey Jr., Jeff (Craig) Bailey, Rick (Tina) Bailey, and Jerry (John David) Bailey.  Nancy also raised grandchildren, Patience Kuhlman, Justin Kuhlman, and Danyelle Kuhlman.  She assisted in raising her great-grandchildren, Rhys, Layne, Keaton, and Gavyn.  Nancy had 14 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.  The Kuhlman grandchildren are Patience, Justin, Danyelle, and Jeremiah.  The Robertson grandchildren are Abbygail, Kyle, Joan, Stephen, and Haylee.  The Bailey grandchildren are Kendra, Clayton, Kirsten, Krista, and Katrina.  Also surviving are her sisters, Virginia Smith and Marjorie Reed.  She was preceded in death by her parents, granddaughters, Angelique Kuhlman, Jessica Robertson, and Keaton Kuhlman, daughter, Janet Lee Bailey Kuhlman, siblings, James Longfellow and Doris Bennett.

Nancy was known as the mother of the neighborhood.  She always tried to care for everyone.  She had the home that friends, neighbors and kids enjoyed.  Nancy made things fun!  For example, during the Blizzard of ’78, she would report “from the Pickard Ski Lodge” our daily activities to WILO radio.  With a warm house, hot chili, and big bowls of popcorn, she made the two weeks snowed in seem like a winter holiday.  During the summers, you might find her with a truckload of kids at the fishing pond or supplying old quilts for a backyard campout.

Nancy enjoyed staying home with her kids, but later went to work at Peter Paul Cadbury Confections.  In 1996, she moved to Frankfort where she worked until retirement at Federal Mogul.  She lived her final years with her son, Jeff and granddaughter and great-grandson, Danyelle and Gavyn.

If you have a nice memory of Nancy, please consider making a donation to a Breast Cancer charity.

Pop corn snack was always a great time. May the memories we all have shine forever. Packard was a great town to grow up in and your parents made sure of it.

Jeff- I’m so sorry that your mom passed. I only met her once when you came strolling through with her on first floor. Her obituary really paints a vivid picture…sounds like she was a fantastic and fun, well-loved lady. Knowing she is finally at peace must be comforting to you, but still hard to lose ‘Mom’. Thinking of you at this difficult time.

Please accept our sincere condolences. Aunt Nancy was an amazing woman. My mother dearly loves her little sister and always enjoyed sending time with her and her family. God and the angels are celebrating having Aunt Nancy in Heaven, which she truly deserves to be in their company.

I would like to share my deepest condolences with Nancy’s family and friends. Nancy has a special place in my heart. As a feral child who did not have any real adult role models, she taught me the meaning of respect, hard work, good times and what a family could be. I have often relied on those early life lessons during my adulthood and have tried to pass along her wisdom to my children and grandchildren. May she live on in my stories of my Pickard days and my times with the Bailey Family.

My deepest sympathy to all the family. I have lots of memories going to Jeff’s house for holidays and such. I got the luck of the draw getting the 3 cup bra. I don’t think any gift will ever surpass the picture Judy got one year from your mom. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
