Sharon Sue Haby

February 3, 2023

Sharon Sue Haby passed away on February 3rd, 2023 at Creasy Springs Health Campus in Lafayette surrounded by her family.  Sharon was born on April 7, 1934 in Amboy, Indiana to Herman Davis and Eva (Bowland) Davis. The oldest of ten, she began caring for others at a young age and was an attentive and loving older sister to her nine younger siblings. She graduated from Peru High School in 1951 and St. Elizabeth School of Nursing in 1954.  That same year she married Richard J. Haby who preceded her in death after their 65th anniversary in 2019.  Always others-focused, she was a nurse at heart and was quick to help many friends, family, and neighbors with her medical care and wisdom. She never knew a stranger.

Although she served as a private-duty nurse in various capacities, Sharon spent the majority of her life as her husband’s active partner in his various business ventures and caring for their six children and later 25 grandchildren. She was an amazingly hard-working woman, but also made time to enjoy many travel adventures with Richard including trips to every continent except Antarctica. Family was vital to her and she loved babies and children!  Sharon was a gracious woman, with hospitality as her middle name.  She was quick to welcome anyone into her home including the many foreign exchange students whom she and Richard hosted through the years.  No one left her home without an offer for a glass of juice or a bite to eat, and often got a humorous or engaging tale of family history as well. Sharon served others with a joyful attitude and willing spirit. From her over 55 years as a member of Community Reformed Church helping with VBS or preparing a meal for someone in need, from volunteering for the Red Cross, or in her years as a board member of the St. Elizabeth School of Nursing, Sharon gave of herself to so many.  She was truly a model of faithfulness to her husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.  She will be missed by many but is now rejoicing in the presence of her savior, Jesus Christ.

    Dear Steve and Diane,
I am so sorry to hear of your Mother’s passing. Since I had several family members in my practice, I came to know your Mother as an interesting and loving mother to her children. Both she and your father were impressively industrious, possibly the two most industrious people in Lafayette. They loved their family and they loved our city. Both your father and your mother will be sorely missed.
My best wishes to you both.

    To the Haby family:

I’m so sorry to learn of your lovely mother’s passing. As you are well aware, she raised a fine family—many of whom were babysitters for my children. Always caring and friendly, she passed those traits on to her girls and I appreciate you coming to my rescue many times. May your mother rest in peace in the Lord’s kingdom–it’s just where she belongs.

    Most sincerely,

    Linda Timmons

    To the Haby “kids”,
We mourn with you on your mother’s passing. Both your mom and dad were remarkable in their own ways and definitely memorable people. We still recall stories from our times with them and you, as children. They left a wonderful legacy in all of you and their grandchildren. Dick and Sharon (and you) made (make) a difference in our world. We feel blessed having known all of you. Carry on…
Love, the Fleck “kids” (Sally, Doug, Mike, Tracy and Phil) and Howard.

Sarah, Beth, Connie, Carol, Susan, Steve,
I have a lot of happy memories of your mom and all of you! I remember when we were at church together and when we lived only a street away from each other. Your mom always talked to me and was very kind to everyone. I appreciated your family, and my thoughts are with you.
