Hugh Miller Fisher, Jr.

October 23, 2015

Hugh Miller Fisher, Jr., 83, Frankfort, Indiana, passed away on Friday, October 23, 2015, at Community North Heart Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born May 1, 1932, in Frankfort and was a lifelong father, husband, agriculturist, and public servant. He attended Jackson Township Schools of Clinton County, Indiana, graduating from High School there in 1950. He then attended Purdue University, studied Animal Husbandry, and graduated in 1954. At Purdue he was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity and served as its president. He was also active on campus — President of the Interfraternity Council, a member of the Livestock Judging Team, Army ROTC, and in other organizations. Purdue experiences culminated in membership in Gimlet and Iron Key honoraries. Upon graduating, Hugh served his country in the U.S. Army as a 1st Lieutenant, at Ft. Knox, KY, and Ft. Benning, GA. Employment after military service included Stark & Wetzel Co., Monsanto Company, and Stine Seed Company.
Hugh loved life, was a humble leader, and had a way of lighting up those around him whether a lifelong friend, or a new acquaintance. He and family lived in many cities of the U.S., particularly enjoying Frankfort on the front and back ends of life, and the US East Coast for 20 years (Wilmington, DE) complete with its landscape and sights. Church and activities involving Martha Ann and Julie were his dedication. In retirement years, Hugh was active in Frankfort Rotary, Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity, Habitat for Humanity, First Evangelical Presbyterian Church, and grandchildren. For the past two years, he resided at Brookdale Senior Living in Castleton (Indianapolis), where he significantly revitalized the Center’s Community Gardens and brought spice to life with his relationships. In his youth, Hugh was fully dedicated to working on the family farm, church youth, sports (notably basketball), and always 4-H.

Hugh, a brother in Alpha Gamma Rho, was a true friend ever since we were at Purdue in the early 1950s. We kept in touch regularly. He and Marti honored Jake by attending Jake’s 70th birthday party at the Michigan State University Club in East Lansing in 1999. Our last meeting was this past July as we attended the funeral services in Marion, IN for another fraternity brother, Wayne Townsend. We both spoke to the gathering in honor of Wayne.

I so enjoyed Hugh and Martha when they came to my dog obedience classes with their little dog. They never missed a class and I loved talking to them and figuring out ways they could handle their dog and use their walkers. Beautiful people who lived a full life and are now together again. My sincere condolences.

So sorry for your loss!! A wonderful man, Hugh was! I thought the world of him, and of Martha. Met Hugh and Martha while working for Dr Regnier. Then Dr Regnier, knowing my son Ben needed a Scout service project and The Fishers needed help with their Christmas decorations that year, brought us together…and a friendship was born! Ben was in middle school and has now graduated from college…and Hugh and Martha never stopped asking about him. I prayed for them and they prayed for me and my family. Have missed them both dearly and will never forget them!
